In the 1998–99 season, Real Madrid started strong but struggled after Guus Hiddink was sacked in February following criticism of players. Despite solid signings like Edgar Pacheco and Robert Jarni, Madrid finished 2nd in La Liga, suffered a humiliating Copa del Rey exit, and were eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals by Dynamo Kyiv. However, they did win the Intercontinental Cup. Raúl was the club’s top scorer, with 28 goals in all competitions.
